Experts are of the view that the recent cataclysm in Uttarakhand was a manmade tragedy. The heady cocktail of unregulated development and tourism coupled with a total disregard for environmental laws have been held responsible for the calamity. If the warnings of scientists, environmentalists and the local people were heeded, many lives, property and the region's economy could have been saved. As of now, Uttarakhand stands ravaged and may remain so for many years to come.
